Washington Kindergarteners Find Huntington a Special Place

While people can disagree on just about anything, one thing that can’t be disputed is that Huntington is a beautiful community. So wonderful that even kindergarten students at Washington Primary School know what a special place their town is.

The youngsters recently celebrated Community Day at the school. It’s an annual event for kindergarten classes that sees classrooms transformed into mini-communities to help the children understand the many parts that go into making a community like Huntington whole.

A special focus was placed on community helpers. People and professions like postal carriers, nurses, police officers, fire fighters, teachers and others in public service were studied. “The children came to school dressed as community helpers and hosted a question and answer session for friends and family,” teacher Susan Busch said.

Students gathered information about their profession, processed it and then acted out their roles for guests. The visitors were impressed with how much detail the youngsters managed to grasp and the obvious pride they felt for being citizens of Huntington.

“A great time was had by all,” Ms. Busch said.
